about

In the past few years, I’ve gotten to participate in the LA dance world, making music for pieces by choreographers Jay Carlon, Lindsey Lollie, Jessica Hemingway, and Joan Fricke. I’ve especially worked closely with Jay Carlon as a collaborator on his site-specific dance theater productions and dance films (even getting to make a few cameos as a dancer!). With residencies through the Annenberg Community Beach House, LA Dance Project, Los Angeles Performance Practice, REDCAT, and Metro Art LA, our collaborations have focused on movement responsive scoring with modular synths, contact microphones, and wireless accelerometers. In addition to these frameworks for music/movement interaction, I’ve made through-composed electronic music for the pieces, which is what is highlighted on this album. The tracks feature fluctuating synth pulses, swirls of noise textures, and pitch-shifted recordings of planetary magnetospheres. A few of them also use alternate tunings: sine waves tuned to the resonant frequencies of the sheet metal (Four Triangles) and slow synth pads in Pythagorean tuning (Voyager). I composed these pieces with the intent to leave room for the dance to speak and hope that this sense of spaciousness is translated to the listener as well. Thanks for listening!
